BMI Limitations & Diabetes Risk

Important: BMI Has Limitations

  • BMI does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass
  • Athletes and muscular individuals may have a high BMI despite low body fat
  • BMI does not account for fat distribution (visceral vs. subcutaneous)
  • Age, sex, and ethnicity can affect the relationship between BMI and health risk
  • Waist circumference may be a better predictor of metabolic risk

BMI & Diabetes Risk

Research shows a strong correlation between higher BMI and Type 2 diabetes risk. Being overweight (BMI 25-29.9) increases your risk, while obesity (BMI 30+) significantly raises it. However, Type 2 diabetes can occur at any weight.

People of South Asian, East Asian, and African descent may face elevated diabetes risk at lower BMI thresholds. The WHO suggests screening for diabetes at BMI 23+ for Asian populations.
